A Thousand Times Good Night (2013) – Review

From the outset, you get the distinct impression that Erik Poppe’s new film is not going to be a picnic. A Thousand Times Good Night is Poppe’s fourth film, of which great things were expected, and he grabs your attention even before the opening credits have finished. Make no mistake about it, Popp wants you focused from the getgo and is not the slightest bit concerned about showing you difficult, uncomfortable imagery to convey that fact.

Labor Day (2014) – Review

Sometimes, in this game, you will watch a movie and really come away with little or nothing to say about it. Just sometimes, you want to watch something and not feel like you should pass judgement or comment on the thing. It’s not normally a good sign, as it usually means it hasn’t raised your hackles enough to rant about how utterly dreadful it was, or provided enough moments that you want to share gushingly with the world with regards to its sheer shiny wonderfulness.

The Three Faces of Eve (1957) – Review

When ‘The Fourth Kind’ was released, the film opened with a very solemn looking Milla Jovovich explaining how the film was based on true events, re-enacted for the benefit of entertainment. It involved the very questionable video testimony of ‘victims’ of alien abduction under hypnosis, in order to retrieve those memories that had been apparently locked away by forces unknown. Realistic? Who would know?
